Grandmother’s Scarves

Inside drawers and her trunk she hid

her independent gypsy soul

losing a husband inside his mind too soon

raising my mother and her siblings

on a resourcefulness honed from a young age

auburn hair and an even quicker wit

there is still sparkle in those tired eyes

inheriting the scarves of many colours

muted gray and blue cashmere plaid

blue delicate flowers with silver threads

red and pink sunset crepe that glides

shimmering, silky crimson, magenta and pink

they hang next to my own scarves of many colours

gently reminding me that of my own independent gypsy spirit

who emerges to play amidst autumn’s beautiful colours.
